We aren’t going to lie to you, reader. When Pantone announced their 2022 Color of the Year, we were a bit shook. Periwinkle is a departure from the woodsy neutrals, moody blacks, and dark greens we have been seeing out and about. The bluish violet hue brings to mind adolescent bedrooms, fairy godmothers, wedding palettes, and hyper-femininity. Simultaneously bright and pastel, Periwinkle is an enigma that has a fascinating history.
Let’s take a look at some Periwinkle fun facts:
- Periwinkle, the blossom, is known as fiore di morte (flower of death), because it was common to lay wreaths on the graves of dead children.
- Vinca, the periwinkle plant, is poisonous to dogs, which is why most people avoid planting it in home gardens.
- A famous use of the hue includes Claude Monet’s Water Lilies. Periwinkle was a favorite among Impressionist painters.
- Periwinkle is also a type of marine snail!
